Evelyn Ruth Fowler, age 100 years and 6 months, died from natural causes, peacefully, at her home in Stamford, Connecticut on February 11, 2022. Evvy was an artist, a writer, a reader, a wit and a wordsmith, an engineer and inventor, an animal lover, a social activist, and one of the founders of the Society of Women Engineers. In addition, she was a wife and mother, who raised four children in Stamford along with a succession of dogs and cats. Evvy was born in Hartford on August 7, 1921, the second daughter of Joseph and Julia Vernick. She was the salutatorian of Hartford Public High School at the age of 16. Julia wanted Evvy to remain in Connecticut and offered to buy her a car if Evvy would go to college locally to become a public school teacher. But Evvy had no interest in teaching; she wanted to study art, so she enrolled at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. After graduating from Pratt, she worked as a draftsperson for Hercules Electric and Manufacturing Co. in Brooklyn, a company doing work to support the war effort during the Second World War. The President of Hercules was the late Alexander Fowler, an electrical engineer who was exempted from the draft on account of his technical expertise. Evvy and Alex married in 1944. Alex suggested that Evvy go back to school to study engineering. She returned to Pratt to study chemical engineering after Columbia refused her admission because she was a woman, and Brooklyn Polytech told her they could not accommodate her because they had no women’s bathrooms. Back at Pratt, Evvy met a small cadre of other women in engineering who were among the nascent core of the Society of Women Engineers. Today, the SWE, now an international organization of more than 40,000 members, continues to promote and support women in the technical and engineering fields. Evvy went on to serve in various roles within the local and national chapters, and designed the original logo of the organization. In the early 1950s, Evvy and Alex formed the American Actuator Corporation which developed industrial safety equipment. Together, they developed electrical control systems to automate the process for bending sheet metal and held several patents for the machinery. Evvy and Alex moved the business and their growing family to Stamford in 1952. While running the business and raising their four children, she found time to return to art, and took up painting, yoga, and swimming. An avid activist for equality, Evvy was an active member of the League of Women voters and Temple Sinai. She was on the Board of the Jewish Historical Society of Fairfield County, the Brandeis organization, and Learning in Retirement. She volunteered for Meals on Wheels, the Tandet Center, the Smith House, and various chamber music groups. Evvy became a vegetarian in the nineteen seventies following one of her children, and brought the New York Times crosswords to a new art form with her multicolored puzzles. Evvy was thoughtful, talented, humble, and kind. She was adept at understanding the woes of others and always looked to contribute to her community. She was the matriarch of her family and will be sorely missed and always remembered. Evelyn Fowler leaves behind her four children, Joseph, Ivan, Daniel, and Mary Fowler (Detienne); six grandchildren, Alex, Benjamin, Diana, Stephen, John Detienne, and Samuel; and four great-grandchildren. A graveside service will take place on Wednesday, February 16, 2022 at 12:00 noon, Fairfield Memorial Park, 230 Oaklawn Ave, Stamford 06905. My Tribute Gift Foundation makes this online charitable giving portal web page MyTributeGift.org (the “Website”) available to you subject to your acceptance of and compliance with these terms of use (the “Terms of Use”). Your donation will be processed through My Tribute Gift Foundation for distribution to your selected charity. Your credit card transaction record will appear as My Tribute Gift Foundation. An official tax receipt for your donation will be issued by My Tribute Gift Foundation. Donations are sent out to charities at the end of each month for all donations received in that previous month. So a donation made on the first day of the month would be sent at the same time as one made on last day. Payments would be sent either by paper check or direct deposit. Please note that the there is 3% + 35¢/transaction fee for credit card processing, My Tribute Gift Foundation collects a 5% administrative fee. These fees help fund the cost of processing all donations, issuing tax receipts, and sending all appropriate information to the selected charity. These fees are assumed by your selected charity, but you will receive a receipt for the full amount of your donation. There are NO additional costs the charity has to endure to participate and accept donations through MyTributeGift.org. According to the American Institute for Philanthropy (charitywatch.org) a charitable organization is considered “Good” if they are spending less than 30% on administration and fundraising costs. My Tribute Gift Foundation helps reduce those administrative costs for charities and allows donors to contribute to lasting memorials for their loved ones.
When donating online, if the donation form has an option to add a tip, there is no convenience fee. The tip is optional and can be adjusted before you submit your donation. The amount of the tip will be displayed to you before you confirm the charge to your payment card. Tips are in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount that goes to the charitable organization. Under IRS and CRA rules, tips are not tax deductible to the donor.
You warrant and represent that all information and materials you provide to My Tribute Gift Foundation, through the Website or otherwise, are accurate and truthful and do not violate third party rights. Indemnity. YOU AGREE TO INDEMNIFY AND HOLD HARMLESS THE FOUNDATION PARTIES FROM AND AGAINST ANY AND ALL CLAIMS, DEMANDS, ACTIONS, SUITS AND PROCEEDINGS BROUGHT BY YOU OR ANY THIRD PARTY (COLLECTIVELY "CLAIMS") ARISING OUT OF YOUR USE OF THIS SITE IN BREACH OF THESE TERMS OF USE OR THE INFRINGEMENT BY YOU OF ANY INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS OF ANY PERSON OR ENTITY, INCLUDING ALL LOSSES, LIABILITIES, DAMAGES, COSTS AND EXPENSES (INCLUDING ALL LEGAL FEES) ARISING FROM SUCH CLAIMS.
If in any part of these Terms of Use is held, by a court of competent jurisdiction, to be invalid or unenforceable, such part of these Terms of Use shall be eliminated to the extent permitted in that jurisdiction, for purposes of that jurisdiction, and the remaining Terms of Use shall otherwise remain in full force and effect.
These Terms of Use and your use of the Website are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and all federal laws of Canada applicable therein. The courts of the Province of Ontario shall have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute arising out of these Terms of Use or your use of the Website.
These Terms of Use constitute the entire agreement between you and My Tribute Gift Foundation with respect to the Website, except as we may explicitly agree otherwise in writing.. No delay or failure to exercise any right with respect to these Terms of Use shall be construed as a waiver by My Tribute Gift Foundation.
As a donor, you are responsible for researching the charity, understanding how your money will be used, and understanding the tax implications of your donation. We will email you a receipt, but the deductibility of your donation depends on your individual tax situation. We are not financial, tax, or legal experts. Please do not rely on our information to make decisions about your finances, taxes or legal matters. Consult a qualified professional in your jurisdiction.
Participating organizations have chosen to actively participate in the “Sponsor Program” to be represented in the Sponsor Charity array in an effort to increase their exposure and the opportunity for more memorial donations to be made to their organization. A rate structure is agreed upon and assessed on each donation processed through that program according to each organization’s individual agreement. Giving through that program has helped many organizations realize a drastic and significant increase in net donations.
If a donation form has a line item of Convenience Fee. The Convenience fee is displayed to you prior to approving the charge to your payment card. The convenience fee is in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount reaching the charitable organization. For example, a $100 donation becomes a $101.50 transaction. The convenience fee is directed immediately to a for-profit service provider. According to IRS and CRA rules the tax deductible receipt will therefore only be issued for the subtotal amount.
My Tribute Gift Foundation seeks to distribute all funds to organizations provided they have maintained active 501c3 certification in the United States or registered charity status in Canada. MTG relies on the beneficiary organizations to maintain and keep up to date contact information on file with the IRS or CRA respectively. This must be done in order for My Tribute Gift Foundation to exercise care and reasonable efforts to distribute payment promptly, without undue cost and burden to the foundation. In the event that a payment has not been deposited 12 months from issuance, the foundation reserves the right to utilize those funds in its mission to the foundation.
My Tribute Gift Foundation reserves the right to modify, change, discontinue and suspend these Terms of Use, the Website, and/or any services offered through the Website, in whole or in part, at any time, without prior notice to you. Your continued access or use of the Website after modifications to these Terms of Use have been posted on the Website shall indicate your acceptance of and agreement to be bound by these Terms of Use as modified. It is your responsibility to review these Terms of Use regularly.
