Obituary of Malcolm Leon Grogins

A proud native, Malcolm (Mickey/Mike) Grogins of Stamford and Delray Beach, Florida passed away on Monday evening June 20th at the Stamford Hospital with his family by his side.  The third son of four children born to Herman and Anna (Kerbel) Groginsky, attended Franklin School, Burdick,  and was a member of Stamford High School class of 1946.  He attended Merrill Business School.  Having an entrepreneurial spirit, as a young man he began driving a truck and delivering soda, owned a dry cleaning business which he sold prior to enlisting in the U.S. Navy.  He was proud to have served on the BBNJ.62 during the Korean War.  The New Jersey is the most decorated battleship in U.S. history.  Upon returning home he purchased Mitchell's Stationery Store on 615 Main Street.  There he was known at "Mr. Mitchell".He was Contacted by Greyhound and Trailways he became their local agent.  The bus depot sparked an interest in travel and so began the years of Air-Land-Sea Travel founded in 1964 which eventually grew to two Stamford locations. He bought and sold real estate, and was one of the first who converted apartments into condos.  He was a Mason for over 60 years and a Shriner and an avid fan of the New York Mets.

 

He met the love of his life Ann Susan Levanda at Hillcrest Variety on Broad Street.  A young nurse who worked in the nursery of Stamford Hospital; they married in April of 1954. He is survived by his daughter Saraa (James) Adelson of Woodmere, NY, Deborah (Neil) Metviner of Stamford, and son David A. Grogins of Stamford.

Also survived by his grandchildren Amanda (Scott) Schimmel of New York City. Aaron Metviner of Stamford and New York City, Zachariah (Tamar) Adelson of Jerusalem, Israel Great granddaughters

Scarlett Fire and Devyn Rose Schimmel of New York City. His sister Belle Cohen of Middlebury, CT and numerous nieces and nephews.  Always by his side was his trusted canine companion Dozer.

 

He was Pre deceased by his parents Herman and Anna Groginsky, his wife Susan Grogins, his brothers Albert Groginsky and Robert Grogins, and his previous companion Bruiser.

 

A Graveside services to be held Wednesday June 22 at 1030am at the Independent Lodge Cemetery, 297 Hoyt Street, Darien, CT.  Special thanks to his wonderful caregiver Nancy, Mirsa, Dr. Shara Israel,  and PT and OT therapists who worked tirelessly to keep him moving.
